he new state of the art baseball and softball complex in Hoofddorp,
Netherlands got inaugurated on Thursday with an opening ceremony at the
new stadium of the facility near Amsterdam. On hand were officials of
the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB), the Dutch
National Olympic Committee (NOC), Major League Baseball International,
Haarlemmermeer municipality and the Hoofddorp Pioniers, as well as local
Jason Holowaty, MLB International's director for game development in Europe and Africa, stated afterwards, "The field is tremendously important for European Baseball. It changes the standard for all future facilities. It is like a Major League Spring Training site, not so big, but with the same functionality. You can see kids running to the batting cages and other kids practicing on the infield. It really helps to train players."
Holowaty, Alderman Adam Elzakalai and Dutch NOC Director Maurits Hendriks threw out ceremonial first pitches following the press conference to officially open the new facility for business. The first European tournament in Hoofddorp will be the European Cup A - Qualifier Champions Cup from June 17 to 22, 2014. Six national champions and vice champions, host Vaessen Pioniers (NED), T&A San Marino (SMA), Solingen Alligators (GER), Nettuno (ITA), Rouen Huskies (FRA) and Kotlarka Prague (CZE) will take the field to
qualify for the European Champions Cup Final Series in the week-long competition.
