European Champions Cup: Recaps Day 1, May 31, 2016

The European Champions Cup started on Tuesday with four games of the first round in Rimini, Italy and San Marino. Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam, the Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg, ASD Rimini and L&D Amsterdam celebrated day one wins.

VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe – Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam 9-14

Game one at the European Champions Cup in San Marino was a slugfest. Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam belted four home runs en route to a 14-9 victory over the VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe in the Group A opener. Rotterdam led 8-1 midway through the third, but Heidenheim came back and tied the contest at 9-9 in the fifth. However Curacao Neptunus scored five unanswered runs in the last three frames to seal the win. Raily Legito, Gianison Boekhoudt, Dashenko Ricardo and Rien Vernooij hit home runs. Boekhoudt and Vernooij combined for seven RBI. Johannes Krumm drove in three for the Heideköpfe. Bayron Cornelisse picked up the win in relief of Orlando Yntema. Patrick Seyfried got charged with the loss.

Kotlarka Prague – Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg 4-7

The Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg scored five runs in the top of the ninth to beat Kotlarka Prague in the first game of Group B in Rimini on Tuesday afternoon. A two-run double by Marcel Jimenez and a two-run single by Maik Ehmcke decided the outcome in the last frame. Prague had led 4-2 since former New York Yankees minor leaguer Daniel Vavrusa hit a two-run home run off Mike Bolsenbroek in the sixth. Daniel Mendelsohn earned the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings. Marek Cervenka issued nine hits, seven runs and four walks in 8 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Fortitudo Bologna – T&A San Marino 5-3

In an inner Italian Baseball League duel in Group A Fortitudo Bologna downed T&A San Marino 5-3. Bologna erased a 0-3 deficit in the process. A two-run home run by Claudio Liverziani in the bottom of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie and secured the victory for last year’s European Champions Cup runner up. Tyler La Torre drove in two for Bologna. Sebastiano Poma scored twice for San Marino. Brent Buffa picked up the win in relief of Matt Zielinski. Junior Oberto replaced Carlos Quevedo in the sixth and took the loss.

ASD Rimini – L&D Amsterdam 2-6

In the evening game in Group B in Rimini L&D Amsterdam beat the hosts of ASD Rimini 6-2. Kevin Heijstek laid the groundwork by allowing no runs in the first six innings, conceding only three hits and a walk. On offense Nick Urbanus crossed the plate in the first for an early lead. He scored again in the third, fifth and seventh as part of a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Michael Duursma and Gilmer Lampe drove in two apiece. Rimini only was able to score in the seventh, when Stefano Desimoni drove in two. Alexis Candelario got charged with the loss. 


On Wednesday day two of the European Champions Cup is played in Rimini and San Marino. In Group A Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam takes on Fortitudo Bologna at 3.30pm in a rematch of last year’s finals. Afterwards T&A San Marino hosts the VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe. In Group B L&D Amsterdam squares off against Kotlarka Prague at 2.30pm. In the evening the Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg play against host ASD Rimini.
