The second day at the European Champions Cup in Rimini and San Marino had everything, pitcher’s duels, close games, comebacks, lopsided wins, rain delays and extra innings. In the end L&D Amsterdam and Fortitudo Bologna each captured their second win and look strong toward the semifinals. Also T&A San Marino and ASD Rimini celebrated victories.
Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam – Fortitudo Bologna 0-1
In a rematch of last year’s final series at the European Champions Cup, the runner up of 2015 beat the winner. Fortitudo Bologna edged out Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam 1-0. A RBI single by Paolino Ambrosino in the second inning proved to be the game-winner. Raul Rivero and Nick Pugliese combined to keep the powerful bats in check, conceding only seven hits and four walks in nine scoreless innings. Diegomar Markwell took the tough loss, allowing nine hits, a run and four walks in seven frames.
L&D Amsterdam – Kotlarka Prague 10-2
The second Dutch team in the competition won their second game. L&D Amsterdam beat Kotlarka Prague 10-2 in a game, which featured a lengthy rain delay and didn’t start until 5.10pm (original start time 2.30pm). Six runs in the fourth blew the game wide open. Remco Draijer and Danny Rombley had two RBI apiece. Nick Urbanus scored three more runs. Pim Walsma and Jimmy Osinga shared the workload on the mound. Marek Minarik got charged with the loss.
T&A San Marino – VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe 4-3 (10)
T&A San Marino erased a 0-2 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and also got back from 2-3 to beat the VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe 4-3 in ten innings. Sascha Lutz and James McOwen had RBI singles in the top of the ninth to give the German champion a late lead. However with two outs and two strikes, Nicholas Morreale hit a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest into extra innings. There McOwen put Heidenheim in front again with a run after a passed ball. However a pair of RBI singles by Luca Pulzetti and Sebastiano Poma helped the Titans to a second comeback and the win.
Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg – ASD Rimini 3-5
In the second Group B game on Wednesday ASD Rimini defeated the Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg 5-3. A three-run sixth put the Pirates up in front 4-2. Ricardo Bertagnon and Freddy Noguera had the big hits with RBI singles. Former Arizona Diamondbacks minor leaguer Maik Ehmcke hit a two-run home run in the first to give Regensburg a 2-1 lead. Carlos Richetti struck out eight for the win. Clayton Voechting got charged with the loss. Both pitched into the sixth inning.
